England’s dramatic World Cup knockout win delivers BBC’s biggest live TV audience of 2026 as record digital engagement surges

England’s dramatic FIFA World Cup victory over DR Congo delivered the BBC’s biggest live audience of 2026, with a peak audience of 16.3 million watching Harry Kane’s late winner on BBC One and BBC iPlayer to send England into the Round of 16.

The match also averaged 14 million viewers and was the most-watched moment on the BBC this year, underlining the nation’s appetite for England’s World Cup campaign.

The knockout victory also fuelled huge digital engagement generating 10.4 million streams across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and the BBC Sport app as audiences followed every moment of the team’s journey to the last 16.

BBC Sport’s live coverage page on the website and app was viewed more than 20 million times globally including 14 million times in the UK with 860,000 visitors aged 16-24, highlighting the BBC’s ability to reach younger audiences at scale. Yesterday was also the BBC Sport website and app’s biggest day since the last FIFA World Cup, attracting 10.8 million unique users.

The BBC’s UHD coverage continued to break records, attracting a new high of 1.36 million concurrent streams as viewers sought the ultimate viewing experience for one of the tournament’s most dramatic matches.

Meanwhile, audiences are embracing the BBC’s new immersive innovations, with the second-screen 3D experience used 285,000 times during England v DR Congo and 3.1 million times across the tournament so far.

The FIFA World Cup continues to drive exceptional digital consumption for the BBC, accounting for more than a third (34%) of all hours streamed on BBC iPlayer during the final week of the group stage.

Football Daily’s visualised podcast is also proving a major hit with fans, generating more than 2 million streams during the group stages. One standout episode alone attracted over 250,000 streams, reflecting growing demand for premium football content beyond the live matches.

Across social media, BBC Sport has generated 889 million video views during the tournament so far. The most-watched clip has reached 14.34 million views, with fans flocking to hear Virgil Van Dijk’s verdict on the tournament’s hydration breaks on BBC Sport’s Instagram account.

BBC Sport’s World Cup documentary content is also continuing to resonate strongly with audiences. England 2006: The Golden Generation has delivered up to 2.4 million views across BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport Football YouTube channel, alongside 9.2 million social video views and 335,000 engagements.

England’s next challenge comes against Mexico in the Round of 16, live and exclusive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 1am on Monday, with uninterrupted coverage. Viewers can also enjoy expert analysis before and after the match from BBC Sport’s world-class team of presenters and pundits. Kelly Cates, Wayne Rooney, Micah Richards and Joe Hart will be live in the studio, with Alan Shearer and Guy Mowbray on commentating duties in Mexico City.

For audiences unable to stay up through the night, spoiler-free highlights will be available on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Football YouTube channel.
