Auckland FC star Guillermo May gave a wholesome interview in the aftermath of the club’s history-making evening in Sydney.
May made himself the hero at Allianz Stadium, where the Uruguayan forward scored the only goal of the game to lead newcomers Auckland to a 1-0 win over Macarthur Bulls and to the top of the Isuzu UTE A-League standings.
Auckland are officially off to the best start by a new team in the competition with four consecutive victories and four straight clean sheets.
After the game, May joined host Daniel Garb, Melbourne Victory great Archie Thompson and former A-Leagues head coach Phil Moss on Paramount+ to dissect the match.
“Hi, thank you, nice to meet you all,” May started off by saying. “We have a great team, we are proving it (smiling).”
May was named man of the match after the former Newell’s Old Boys forward struck in the 34th minute as Auckland played outside of New Zealand for the first time, having conquered Brisbane Roar, Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix on Kiwi soil.
It was May’s first goal in the Isuzu UTE A-League.
“It’s amazing. We work so hard together,” said the 26-year-old.
“I’m not the man of the match I think. AP (Alex Paulsen), Dan Hall, all the defence, we work all together. Sometimes we are not in our better match, so sometimes we must win this type of game working hard and scoring the situations we have.”
Auckland were back in action following an extended break.
Steve Corica’s Auckland had the round-four bye prior to the international window.
“It’s difficult,” May said when asked how hard it was to find rhythm after the bye. “To keep winning we must have games, lots of games. We must gain our feelings together because we are all new. It’s a new team, a new situation. We have to be together all the time and we have to play.
It is a new experience for May and his Auckland team-mates.
This is Auckland’s first season as a club following their introduction for the 2024-25 Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.
For May, who has also played for Uruguayan giants Nacional, he said: “When they told me to come here, it was like all new. I don’t know nothing but sometimes it’s really good to make a new history.
To conclude the interview, May was asked for his thoughts on the Isuzu UTE A-League.
“It’s a really good club,” Auckland’s South American recruit said.
“Steve and his whole staff are doing for us a really good job.
“Not only me, Felipe (Gallegos), Neyder (Moreno), Louis (Verstraete), Hiroki (Sakai), we are all together and enjoying being here because they are doing a really good job with us, also our team-mates.”
