Mercedes Dominate Australian Grand Prix 2026 as Russell Wins Season Opener in Melbourne

The 2026 Formula 1 season began in thrilling fashion at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, where Mercedes delivered a dominant performance to secure a 1-2 finish. George Russell claimed victory ahead of teammate Kimi Antonelli, while Ferrari completed the podium with Charles Leclerc in third place after an intense strategic battle at Albert Park.
The race featured dramatic starts, bold overtakes and multiple Virtual Safety Car periods, setting the tone for what promises to be a highly competitive new era of Formula 1.

Mercedes Start New Era with Perfect 1-2 Finish
Mercedes enjoyed the ideal start to the 2026 campaign as George Russell converted strong pace into victory. Although he lost the lead to Charles Leclerc at the start, Russell fought back in a thrilling early duel that saw both drivers exchange positions several times.
A well-timed pit stop under the first Virtual Safety Car allowed Mercedes to switch to a one-stop strategy, which ultimately proved decisive. Russell managed his tyres perfectly in the final stint to secure the win.
Teammate Kimi Antonelli also recovered impressively after a difficult start dropped him to seventh. The Italian rookie worked his way back through the field and finished second, completing a memorable 1-2 result for the Silver Arrows.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff praised the team’s performance and the strong preparation that led to their dominant start.

Ferrari Show Early Speed but Miss Strategic Opportunity
Ferrari looked extremely competitive at the start of the race. Charles Leclerc launched from fourth on the grid into the lead in the opening corner, showcasing the team’s strong race pace.
However, Ferrari decided not to pit during the first Virtual Safety Car period, opting instead to stay out and maintain track position. When the team eventually made their pit stops under normal racing conditions, they lost crucial time and fell behind the Mercedes drivers.
Leclerc eventually finished third, while Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in fourth after a consistent performance. Despite missing out on victory, Ferrari left Melbourne encouraged by their competitiveness.

McLaren Experience Mixed Fortunes at Home Race
McLaren endured a difficult start to the season, especially for Australian driver Oscar Piastri. The Melbourne native crashed into the barriers during the reconnaissance lap on his way to the grid, ending his race before it had even begun and disappointing the home crowd.
Lando Norris was McLaren’s sole representative in the race and delivered a solid drive to finish fifth. Norris defended strongly against Max Verstappen in the closing stages and managed his tyres well during a two-stop strategy.

Verstappen Recovers from P20 to Finish in the Points
Red Bull experienced contrasting fortunes during the race. Rookie Isack Hadjar, who started third, was forced to retire after suffering a power unit failure early in the race.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen produced one of the standout performances of the afternoon. Starting from the back of the grid in 20th position, the Dutch driver fought his way through the field to finish sixth. Despite tyre degradation issues in the final stint, Verstappen’s recovery drive secured valuable points for Red Bull.

Strong Results for Haas, Racing Bulls and Audi
Several midfield teams delivered impressive performances in Melbourne.
Haas driver Oliver Bearman finished seventh after an aggressive race that included multiple overtakes and strong tyre management. The result marked an excellent start to the season for the American team.
Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad also impressed by finishing eighth on his Formula 1 debut, demonstrating strong race craft and composure under pressure.
Audi celebrated a historic moment in their first Formula 1 race as Gabriel Bortoleto finished ninth, scoring the team’s maiden championship points.
Pierre Gasly secured the final point for Alpine in tenth place after an intense battle with Esteban Ocon in the closing laps.

Challenging Weekend for Williams, Cadillac and Aston Martin
Williams struggled to compete in the midfield battle, with Alex Albon finishing 12th and Carlos Sainz down in 15th after multiple pit stops and technical issues.
New entrant Cadillac completed their first Formula 1 race weekend, with Sergio Perez finishing 16th. Although Valtteri Bottas retired due to a fuel system issue, the team considered the race an important step in their development.
Aston Martin endured a particularly difficult weekend as both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll retired after reliability problems forced them out of contention.
⸻
Tyre Strategy Plays Key Role in Melbourne
According to Pirelli, tyre management played a crucial role in the outcome of the race. The majority of leading teams opted for a one-stop strategy as tyre degradation proved lower than expected.
The hard compound tyre delivered strong durability, allowing drivers to extend their final stints and maintain competitive pace until the finish.
However, Pirelli expects tyre strategies to evolve as teams continue to develop their cars and the championship moves to more demanding circuits.
