Australia GP Review: Mercedes Dominate Season Opener as Piastri Suffers Heartbreaking Early Exit

Melbourne: Formula 1’s new era roared into life in spectacular fashion at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, where Mercedes made the perfect start to the season with a commanding 1-2 finish, while local favourite Oscar Piastri endured a devastating pre-race retirement at Albert Park.

With drama before the lights even went out, fierce battles at the front, and plenty of overtaking throughout the field, the season opener delivered an exciting first chapter to the new campaign.

Mercedes make dream start

Mercedes emerged as one of the strongest teams of the weekend after George Russell and Kimi Antonelli locked out the front row in Qualifying with an impressive margin over the rest of the field.

But despite their dominant one-lap pace, Sunday’s race was far from straightforward for the Silver Arrows.

At the start, Ferrari came alive. Charles Leclerc made an excellent launch to snatch the lead from Russell into the opening corner, while Antonelli dropped down the order to seventh after a difficult getaway. What followed was a thrilling duel between Russell and Leclerc in the opening laps, with the Ferrari driver initially managing to stay ahead.

A key turning point came during the Virtual Safety Car periods. Mercedes reacted decisively by bringing both Russell and Antonelli into the pits during the first VSC, while Ferrari opted to keep both of their cars out on track. That decision ultimately proved costly for the Scuderia, as both Ferrari drivers lost vital track position once they eventually made their stops.

Although Mercedes still faced concerns over tyre life and the possibility of a second pit stop, both Russell and Antonelli managed their tyres superbly and held on until the chequered flag, sealing a superb 1-2 finish for the Brackley-based team.

The result gives Mercedes early momentum heading into the second round of the season in China, even if Ferrari’s pace showed that a close battle may lie ahead.

Ferrari show promising pace

Ferrari had already caught attention during pre-season testing in Bahrain, where the team combined strong reliability with competitive lap times. Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets on the second test, while Lewis Hamilton spoke positively about feeling in a very good place heading into the new season.

That encouraging form continued in Melbourne practice, although Ferrari were unable to match Mercedes in Qualifying, finishing around eight-tenths off Russell’s pole time. Leclerc lined up fourth on the grid, with Hamilton in seventh.

However, both Ferrari drivers made an excellent start to the Grand Prix. Leclerc immediately moved into the lead, while Hamilton also stayed firmly in the fight near the front.

Despite their strong race pace, Ferrari’s strategy choices during the VSC periods appeared to hurt their chances of fighting for victory. By staying out while Mercedes pitted, the Scuderia surrendered track position later in the race. Even so, Ferrari still delivered an encouraging overall performance.

Leclerc secured third place and a podium finish, while Hamilton came home in fourth, finishing just behind his teammate after closing the gap late in the race.

Afterwards, Leclerc was satisfied with Ferrari’s strong start to the race, while Hamilton struck an optimistic tone, saying there were many positives to take from the weekend and expressing excitement for the upcoming rounds.

Piastri’s home race heartbreak

For Australian fans, the biggest disappointment of the day came before the race had even started.

McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris had qualified fifth and sixth respectively, and while the team did not appear to have the outright pace of Mercedes or Ferrari, there was still hope that they could challenge for a strong result.

But in a shocking moment on his way to the grid, Piastri lost control of his McLaren at the exit of Turn 4 and crashed into the wall, ending his home Grand Prix before it began.

Fortunately, the 24-year-old was unhurt, but the damage to the car was too severe for him to take the start.

Explaining the incident afterwards, Piastri said that the car appeared to behave within the regulations, but a sudden increase in power at the moment of shifting triggered wheelspin while he was already on the kerb, creating the perfect storm for the crash.

The Australian admitted the incident was especially painful given that it happened at his home event, describing it as a bitter disappointment.

On the other side of the McLaren garage, Norris managed to salvage some points by finishing fifth, after holding off pressure from Max Verstappen in the closing stages. Even so, Norris admitted afterwards that McLaren still have significant work to do to improve the car.

Strong statement to open new era

The 2026 Australian Grand Prix delivered drama, disappointment and a major statement from Mercedes, who could hardly have asked for a better start to Formula 1’s new era.

With Russell taking victory, Antonelli completing a 1-2 for the Silver Arrows, Ferrari showing strong promise, and Piastri suffering heartbreak in front of his home crowd, the opening round has already set the stage for what could be a thrilling season ahead.
