Hawks learn compo as mid’s move confirmed

HAWTHORN midfielder James Worpel will join Geelong as a free agent, with the Hawks receiving an end-of-second round pick as compensation.

The Hawks decided on Friday against matching the Cats’ four-year offer for the restricted free agent.

Worpel has long been expected to join Geelong after eight seasons and 148 games for the Hawks.

The 26-year-old played 21 games for the Hawks this year, averaging 20.1 disposals, five tackles and 4.8 clearances.

“As is James’ right as a restricted free agent, he has chosen to seek a new opportunity at Geelong,” Hawthorn national recruiting and list manager Mark McKenzie said.

“Playing 148 games for the Hawks, James was always a popular teammate and respected figure at our club.

“On behalf of the club, I’d like to acknowledge James’ amazing contribution to Hawthorn, his professionalism and dedication never wavered during his eight seasons in the brown and gold, giving his all each week.

“We wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Hawthorn has been chasing a midfielder this off-season and is pursuing Essendon captain Zach Merrett.

Worpel adds depth to the Cats’ engine room, joining the likes of Tom Atkins, Bailey Smith and Max Holmes in the middle.

“We’re really pleased to welcome James to the Cats,” Geelong executive general manager of football Andrew Mackie said.

“James is a quality person and player who we believe will complement our current playing group. We’re looking forward to seeing him in the hoops in 2026.”

Worpel arrived at the Hawks as pick No.45 in the 2017 draft and won the Peter Crimmins Medal in 2019.
