Emirates GBR strategist Mills warns “Anything can happen in Geneva

Fresh from victory in Saint-Tropez, strategist Hannah Mills says her in-form Emirates GBR team are braced for more SailGP drama as the Rolex Switzerland Sail Grand Prix gets underway in Geneva.

Emirates GBR claimed their second win of the season at the ROCKWOOL France Sail Grand Prix after a dominant opening day left them clear at the top of the leaderboard.

Racing was cancelled on Saturday due to forecast storms, sealing the British team’s triumph.

“It sunk in on Saturday morning at 7.30am when we got the text saying racing was cancelled,” Mills said at Friday’s press conference.

“We won, and that was obviously an amazing position to be in. We obviously sailed amazingly well on the Friday to put ourselves in that place, but sometimes in our sport the weather plays its hand in fate. It was great to take the win.”

Now, attention turns to the iconic Lake Geneva, where light, shifty breezes are expected to test the fleet – and Mills knows nothing can be taken for granted.

“Hopefully we can get more podiums,” she said. “As we keep saying, SailGP continues to throw curveballs. Expect the unexpected is always the motto. As a team you’re just trying to push to get off the start line, get to mark one, and see where you end up at the end of the day.”

Asked who fans should keep an eye on, Mills pointed to Spanish outfit Los Gallos.

“They’ve been notoriously strong in the lighter breezes – very sniggly round the race course,” she said. “They’re definitely the ones to watch. But as we’ve seen throughout the season, any team has a shot at the podium.”

With form, confidence, and momentum on their side, Emirates GBR will be looking to ride the wave of their Saint-Tropez success into Swiss waters.
