World Games 2025: 17-member Indian squad in action in Chengdu

India have sent a 17-member contingent for the World Games 2025, scheduled in Chengdu, the People’s Republic of China, from August 6 to 17.

This is the 12th edition of the World Games, which is a quadrennial event for non-Olympic sports.

Running since 1981, the multi-sport event typically takes place a year after the Olympics.

The 2025 World Games will feature 253 medal events across 34 sports and 60 disciplines, with powerboating and cheerleading making their debuts at the quadrennial meet.

India, however, will be represented in 23 medal events across five sports – archery, billiards, racquetball, roller sports or skating and wushu.

The Indian World Games contingent to Chengdu includes multiple medallists from the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou.

The list includes compound archers Abhishek Verma and Parneet Kaur, speedskaters Velkumar Anand Kumar and Aryanpal Singh Ghuman, as well as wushu athlete Naorem Roshibina Devi.

Other notable members include Madhura Dhamangaonkar, who won the women’s individual gold medal at the Shanghai leg of the 2025 Archery World Cup and former billiards world champion Sourav Kothari.

India will also compete in the mixed team compound event, which will also feature at the LA 2028 Olympics.

Indian badminton legend Prakash Padukone won a bronze medal in men’s singles at the inaugural 1981 World Games held in Santa Clara – seven years before the sport made its Summer Olympics debut in Seoul.

Abhishake Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam won the mixed team compound archery bronze medal at the last edition held in Birmingham in 2022.

Rekha Mal, powerlifting bronze in 1989, is the other Indian World Games medallist.
