98.8% correct: Football Australia report shows huge referee improvement in Isuzu UTE A-League

Football Australia has revealed the findings of its post-season review into refereeing standards and the use of VAR following the conclusion of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 season.

The report shows a clear and measurable improvement on the previous season in terms of decision-making accuracy and officiating performance.

98.8% of VAR decisions from last season were proven to be correct, according to a review by Football Australia’s referee coaching team.

In total, there were just 48 VAR reviews last season from a total of 176 Isuzu UTE A-League matches, including the Finals Series – 44 fewer reviews than the 2023-24 campaign.

While 1,556 on-field decisions made across the entirety of the campaign the 2024-25 season ended with a referee intervention rate of just 4%.

The total number of red cards fell by 56.8%; there was also a 12.8% reduction in yellow cards per game.

“We’re seeing tangible year-on-year improvement – not just in accuracy, but in game management and the integration of new talent into the elite level,” said Football Australia Head of Referees Jon Moss.

“The data tells a clear story: fewer cards, fewer incorrect calls, and more consistency.

“This is a credit to the professionalism of our referees and their willingness to adapt to the tactical shifts occurring in the A-Leagues.”

Australian Professional Leagues (APL) Executive Chairman, the Hon Stephen Conroy believes the report highlights the positive effect the standard of officiating is having on the competitions.

“The improvement in officiating standards this season is a credit to the collaboration between Football Australia, our referees, and the A-Leagues clubs.

“These results reflect the hard work being done behind the scenes to build confidence in decision-making, strengthen the matchday experience, and ensure our competitions are among the best officiated in the region.

“We thank our match officials for their professionalism and commitment to continual improvement.”

Football Australia Interim CEO, Heather Garriock added: “This season’s data demonstrates the progress we’re making in delivering officiating that is both accurate and aligned with the modern game.”

“To see improved decision-making across the board, combined with fewer cards
and a low VAR intervention rate, speaks volumes about the quality and consistency of our match officials.”
