WAFCON 2024: Algeria book historic quarter-final berth

Algeria booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2024 (WAFCON) for the first time in history, after holding Nigeria to a goalless draw in Casablanca, Morocco, on Sunday (13 July).

In a tense Group B encounter at Stade Larbi Zaouli, Nigeria dominated possession and created numerous chances, but Algeria’s disciplined defending — and a standout performance from goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi — kept the Super Falcons at bay.

The result saw Algeria finish second in the group with five points, behind Nigeria, who topped the standings with seven.

Les Fennecs join Nigeria, host nation Morocco, and Zambia as the teams already through to the last eight.

Elsewhere, Botswana kept their qualification hopes alive with a dramatic 2-1 win over Tunisia. Yesmin Khanchouch gave the Carthage Eagles an early lead in the 12th minute, scoring their first goal of the tournament.

Botswana responded in thrilling fashion, netting a late injury-time winner to secure all three points.

But the Mares must wait for the results of Monday’s final Group C games to see if they advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
