Cristiano Ronaldo’s future has finally been resolved. The Portuguese superstar has extended his stay at Saudi club Al Nassr by signing a lucrative contract which runs until 2027, reportedly earning him a staggering $645,000 per day.
For the Saudi project, retaining Ronaldo in the league is a victory in itself. However, the 40-year-old has yet to secure a major trophy with the Riyadh-based club, and that’s something we need to discuss.
Where are the trophies?
Since joining the club in January 2023, Ronaldo has collected individual awards in fine style. In his two full seasons, he has been the league’s top scorer, winning the Golden Boot while competing against numerous younger stars who have arrived from Europe since his move to Saudi Arabia. This achievement is remarkable.
But here’s the thing — Al Nassr need to win the Saudi Pro League title. That’s their ambition, and the fans demand it.
The title drought continues
The club last won the league in 2019, before the current footballing revolution began and before Ronaldo’s arrival. They have spent a fortune since, but haven’t achieved the glory yet.
Remember, their rivals Al Hilal have appointed former Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi. He is a top-quality manager.
The competition is fierce
Whilst the club has made stellar signings, they need to re-enter the transfer market and add more quality to assemble a team capable of competing with top-quality opponents. These include former champions Al Hilal, current Saudi champions Al Ittihad and reigning AFC Champions League winners Al Ahli.
The 1000-goal dream
Let’s talk about something mind-blowing. Ronaldo will be aiming to get past that 1000-goal mark before his contract expires in 2027. He is on 938 goals. If he stays injury-free, I am sure he can score 62 goals in two seasons, and he will be 42 by then.
That would be an unbelievable achievement and an insane feat of longevity. Just wow. But can he win a major trophy in the Al Nassr shirt? Only time will tell.
