England Women dazzle The Spitfire Ground with win over West Indies

The Vitality Blast is back very soon!

The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence gets its first taste of all-action Vitality Blast T20 cricket on Friday 6 & Sunday 8 June, with the visits of Surrey & Hampshire Hawks to Canterbury:

Sophia Dunkley led England Women to a winning start under their new coach-captain combination of Charlotte Edwards and Nat Sciver-Brunt, helping her side to an eight-wicket win at Canterbury despite a fine century from Hayley Matthews.

Matthews was awarded Player of the Match for her century, brought up off the final ball of her team’s innings, taking them to 146-7. The West Indies captain’s innings contributed a staggering 68.49% of her team’s total.

But Dunkley was in no mood to let that be a game-winning effort, compiling a career-best 81 not out as England Women chased down the total for the loss of just two wickets.

Earlier, in the face of Matthews’ sparkling knock, England’s bowlers had all contributed. Warwickshire all-rounder Em Arlott took her maiden international wicket on debut, with Hampshire spinner Linsey Smith probably the stand-out performer with a parsimonious 1-18 from her four overs.

Dunkley, who was ably supported by Heather Knight in a third-wicket partnership of 94, hit the winning runs to take England Women home and put them 1-0 up in the Vitality IT20 series.

England & India are coming to Canterbury later this month!

England Lions will face India A in a four-day match on 30 May – 2 June at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence.

Up-and-coming international players from both nations will contest the first match in a two-game series at the Home of Kent Cricket, as a part of the India Test team’s tour of England this Summer.

The Rothesay Men’s Test series between England Men and India Men begins at Headingley on Friday 20 June.

Tickets for each day’s play are priced as £16 for adults and £5 for Under 14s, with complimentary entry for all 2025 Kent Members as part of their Membership offering for this Summer.

The last England Lions match at The Spitfire Ground took place against South Africa in 2022, with the likes of England’s Ben Duckett and Harry Brook both scoring centuries.

Kent Women will take on The Blaze in the Quarter Finals of the Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence this Saturday, 24 May, an 11:00 start.

The Horses have been away throughout the competition so far, reaching the Quarter Final stage after three successive victories in the tournament, most recently with victory away at Cambridgeshire this past Saturday.

Should Kent Women be victorious over The Blaze, they will book a place at the Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup Finals Day at The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton, on Monday 26 May.
