MRP confirms suspension for Western United defender

Football Australia’s independent Match Review Panel (MRP) has confirmed a one-game ban for Western United’s Julia Sardo after she was sent off in Round 18 of the Ninja A-League.

Sardo was shown a red card in Western’s shock 3-0 loss away to Perth Glory at the Sam Kerr Football Centre on Friday night.

The defender made a desperate challenge on Wales international Megan Wynne and was dismissed in the 70th minute.

After “Denying the opposing team an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, as prescribed in Law 12 of the Laws of the Game”, the MRP has confirmed Sardo will miss Friday night’s clash with Canberra United in Tarneit before returning to face Newcastle Jets on March 30.

Meanwhile, the MRP also confirmed suspensions for Central Coast Mariners forward Shadeene Evans and Newcastle Jets forward Sheridan Gallagher.

Shadeene Evans of Central Coast Mariners receives a second yellow card and is sent off during the round 18 A-League Women’s match against Adelaide United.

Evans was sent off after collecting two yellow cards in Central Coast’s 1-0 loss to Adelaide United on Saturday and will now sit out Friday’s matchup against Perth Glory as per the mandatory one-match ban.

As for Gallagher, she will serve a one-game suspension after accumulating her eighth yellow card of the season. The Jets attacker was yellow carded in Newcastle’s 1-0 win over reigning champions Sydney FC on Saturday. She will be free to play Melbourne Victory after missing this week’s trip to Brisbane Roar.
