Villa legend Shaw dies aged 63 after fall

Former Aston Villa Star Gary Shaw Passes Away at 63

Gary Shaw, the former Aston Villa striker who played a key role in the club’s historic victories in the 1981 league title and the 1982 European Cup, has passed away at the age of 63 due to injuries sustained in a fall.

Shaw, a product of Villa’s youth academy, made a significant impact at the club, scoring 79 goals in 213 appearances. His contributions were vital during the 1980s, helping Villa achieve top honors. In a statement, Aston Villa Football Club expressed their deep shock and sadness at his passing, highlighting his importance as one of their European Cup-winning heroes.

“Gary was a talented striker who delighted supporters with his goal-scoring exploits and played a crucial role in Villa’s success,” the club said. “He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”

Shaw’s achievements extended beyond club football. He was named the Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year in 1981 and the European Young Player of the Year in 1982. Although he earned only seven caps for England Under-21s, many believe he was more than capable of making a mark as a full England international.

Shaw’s career at Villa saw him partner with Peter Withe, forming a formidable duo that secured the league title in 1981 and the European Cup in 1982. Despite injuries and a career that took him through Denmark, Austria, and Hong Kong, Shaw continued to be involved in football as a statistical analyst and later as a club ambassador at Villa Park.

Current Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has dedicated the upcoming Champions League opener against Young Boys to Shaw, using it as a source of motivation. Emery noted, “We have a memory always, in our training ground, a picture of 1982 and the European Cup. Gary was a protagonist of that.”

Shaw’s legacy as a beloved figure at Villa Park, remembered fondly by fans and teammates alike, will continue to be celebrated. His remarkable career and enduring impact on the game ensure he will be remembered with great respect.
