Victory goalkeeper Langerak announces retirement after record-breaking 18-year career

Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Mitch Langerak has announced his retirement from professional football, with the 36-year-old hanging up the gloves following the conclusion of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 season.

Langerak re-joined Victory in January, 2025 signing an 18-month deal to return to the club where he first made his name in Australian professional football.

The 36-year-old made his debut with the Victory in 2008 and went on to enjoy a stellar career abroad with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart, Levante and Nagoya Grampus before returning to the club where it all began to finish his career this year.

Langerak made 11 appearances in his second stint in Melbourne and will now take up a coaching role with Victory’s Academy Program to help develop the next generation of goalkeepers.

The 36-year-old’s presence was immediately felt upon his return to the club as he made 11 consecutive appearances for head coach Arthur Diles’ side as they qualified for the Isuzu UTE A-League Grand Final.

Unfortunately for Langerak though, a foot injury sustained late in the regular season meant he would play no part for the club in the Finals Series, with Victory eventually suffering defeat against arch-rivals Melbourne City in the decider.

“After beginning my senior career here at Melbourne Victory, it’s been a privilege to go full circle and also play my final games as a professional footballer with this Club,” Langerak said.

“Having been overseas for so many years, I was fortunate to find great success in Germany, Spain and then again in Japan.

“I’m so grateful to the clubs I called home for the duration of my playing career. To play and lead teams to success is the ultimate goal for any footballer, so to have achieved that in my career is a proud moment for me and my family.

“Coming back and making Melbourne home was a wonderful way to spend my final minutes on the pitch. I look forward to being able to bring the experience and hunger I had as a player to my new perspective while coaching.

“Victory always strives to win and I want to continue to contribute to the club’s success.”

Making his Isuzu UTE A-League debut with the club during the 2008/09 season, Langerak would go on to win both the Premiership and Championship titles with Victory before joining German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, a move which began a 15-year stint playing overseas.

The transfer window is heating up across the Isuzu UTE A-League and Ninja A-League, with clubs locking in key signings, confirming departures, and reshaping their squads ahead of the new season.

Following spells with fellow German club VFB Stuttgart and Spanish side Levante, the shot-stopper then settled in Japan where he went on to become a club legend at J1 League side Nagoya Grampus, winning the J-League Cup in both 2021 and 2024 whilst also setting numerous records including most clean sheets kept in a single season (18).

“Mitch has been one of the great success stories of Melbourne Victory and the A-League,” said Melbourne Victory Director of Football John Didulica

“As a goalkeeper and a leader, he has had incredible success abroad and it’s special for him and the club to be part of the full circle moment of his return to Victory earlier this year.

“His journey back to us is a testament to Mitch as a footballer coupled with his dedication to the game for so many years  on the international stage.

“Mitch is an incredible asset and possesses the important qualities that we value at Melbourne Victory in our football department.

“Now transitioning to the next chapter, we thank Mitch for his contributions as a player and we greatly look forward to having him continue his journey with us as a coach in our Academy program.”
