Sydney FC boss all but confirms transfer rumour & hints at big January plans

Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay said “there’s a few things happening in the background” as the Sky Blues look to bolster their squad in the January transfer market, while he addressed speculation regarding Patrick Wood.

The Isuzu UTE A-League transfer window runs from January 16 to February 12, with clubs able to sign and sell players during that timeframe.

After Wednesday’s 0-0 draw away to Wellington Phoenix, Talay was asked if Sydney were eyeing reinforcements after recruiting Brazilian superstar Douglas Costa, Patryk Klimala, Leo Sena and Anas Ouahim before the start of the season, while Alexandar Popovic signed a six-month loan deal.
There’s a few things happening in the background,” Talay told reporters. “Whether they come to fruition or not, we will see.

That’s the thought process at the moment.”

In terms of departures, Sydney striker Wood has been linked with a loan move to A-Leagues rivals Perth Glory.

The 22-year-old has made nine appearances and scored one goal in the league this season, though he has only started once.

Asked about the rumours, Talay replied: “If you look across the whole of the A-League, generally those positions up front are always taken up by foreign players. It’s very hard for local players to get regular game time.
