Sanath Jayasuriya named Sri Lanka’s interim head coach

Former Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the interim head coach of the country’s national men’s cricket team. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Monday (July 8) issued an official press release to reveal the development.

Jayasuriya, who is currently serving as the cricket consultant for SLC shall take over his new job with immediate effect and has been appointed for the role till the end of Sri Lanka’s tour of England in September.

The legendary allrounder’s appointment comes in the aftermath of resignations from Chris Silverwood (head coach) and Mahela Jayawardene (consultant) following a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign for Sri Lanka.

Jayasuriya’s first assignment as interim head coach will be the white-ball home series of three ODIs and three T20Is against India that starts on July 27. CEO of SLC, Ashley de Silva sounded upbeat about Jayasuriya’s appointment and backed the latter to stabilise Sri Lankan cricket in the days to come.

“Sanath with his wealth of international cricketing experience is well positioned to guide the national team, until we find a permanent solution,” said de Silva in the official press release.
