PCB says goodbye to Pakistan cricket team’s fielding coach; appoints McDermott

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided not to retain fielding coach Mohammad Masroor, whose contract was series-to-series, according to sources. The decision was made as part of a backroom overhaul ahead of the team’s upcoming assignments.

Muhammad Masroor, known for his extensive work with Pakistan’s youth teams and his recent stint with the senior side, had been tasked with improving one of Pakistan’s longest-standing weaknesses: fielding and fitness standards.

His resignation comes at a time when the national team continues to face serious scrutiny over its fielding performance, which has cost Pakistan crucial matches over the years.

In high-stakes games, especially in the 2019 ICC World Cup, T20 World Cups, and various Asia Cups, Pakistan’s fielding lapses have often become turning points, leading to disappointing exits or close losses.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has cycled through several fielding coaches, but lasting improvement has remained elusive.

For the Bangladesh tour, PCB has appointed Australian Shane McDermott as the new fielding coach. McDermott brings significant international experience, having previously worked with Australia, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

In another major move, Grant Luden has been re-appointed as Pakistan’s Strength and Conditioning Coach. Luden has previously served with the national team and is well-versed with the players’ fitness needs.

Sources revealed that both Shane McDermott and Grant Luden have already been added to the newly created WhatsApp group of the national team’s coaching staff and management to ensure seamless coordination.

Additionally, former fast bowler Umar Gul has been appointed as the head coach of Pakistan Shaheens (Pakistan A team), a move aimed at grooming young talent and providing them with experienced guidance.

Masroor, who has previously worked successfully with the Pakistan U-19 team and various domestic sides, was seen as a figure who could instill modern techniques.

The timing of the resignation is particularly critical as the Asia Cup is just around the corner, to be hosted in India. Pakistan is expected to face arch-rivals India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and potentially Afghanistan in a highly competitive environment.

Without a fielding coach in place, Pakistan’s preparations may suffer, especially as fielding will play a decisive role on Indian pitches known for fast outfields. The PCB now faces the urgent task of finding a capable replacement who can quickly integrate with the team and uplift fielding standards before the tournament begins.
