Neeraj Chopra reclaims world No. 1 ranking in javelin throw, Arshad Nadeem in fourth spot

India’s Neeraj Chopra has reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the men’s javelin throw world rankings from Grenada’s Anderson Peters.

The World Athletics updated the latest rankings earlier this week. The Indian javelin throw ace has 1445 ranking points compared to Peters’ 1431.

Reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan is fourth in the world rankings with 1370 points to his name.

Germany’s Julian Weber, who holds the world-leading throw of 2025 with a 91.06m effort at the Doha Diamond League, is third in the rankings while Czechia’s Jakub Vadlejch, the Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, completes the top five.

Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist and reigning world champion, had lost the top spot to Peters in the rankings released on September 17, 2024, shortly after the Paris Olympics, where he had clinched silver and Peters the bronze.

The Indian javelin thrower’s consistent performances through the 2025 athletics season have seen him climb back to the top.

Neeraj began the year with a win at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April and followed it up with a second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League in May, where he logged a new national record of 90.23m to enter the coveted 90m club.

He placed second again at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland later that month but returned to winning ways at the Paris Diamond League in June with an 88.16m effort.

The 26-year-old Neeraj also added the Ostrava Golden Spike title to his name earlier this week.

Neeraj has finished ahead of Anderson Peters in all four of their meetings this year, extending his streak over his rival from Grenada.

The last time Neeraj finished behind Peters in a javelin throw competition was at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where the Grenadian athlete won gold and the Indian settled for silver.

Overall, Tokyo 2020 champion Neeraj leads Peters 16-5 in the finals of javelin throw competitions to date.

The two athletes are expected to face off again at the NC Classic 2025 in Bengaluru on July 5.
