“Throughout his career as one of the world’s best players, and as an experienced coach, Javier has always demonstrated what makes him great – relentless determination with the knowledge, instincts and understanding to back it up,” said Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham. “We’re very excited to welcome him to lead our team.”
Mascherano takes the reins of a squad stacked with big names. Among them are four of his former Barcelona team-mates: FIFA World Cup™ winners Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, along with Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba.
Prior to accepting the Inter Miami post, Mascherano guided Argentina to the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Paris 2024 quarter-finals.
“To be able to lead a club like Inter Miami is an honour for me and a privilege I will strive to make the most of,” said Mascherano. “I was drawn to the organisation’s undeniable ambition, and the infrastructure it has to support it. I’m looking forward to working with the people at Inter Miami to help the club reach new heights, and to give the fans more unforgettable moments.”
Inter Miami enjoyed their most successful campaign to date in 2024, finishing with the best regular-season record in MLS to capture the Supporters’ Shield trophy. However, their post-season quest for the MLS Cup came to an abrupt end in round one, with a series defeat to Atlanta United.

A very busy and important 2025 awaits Mascherano and Inter Miami. In addition to participating in their usual competitions of the MLS and Leagues Cup, plus the Concacaf Champions Cup, Inter Miami will be one of only two American teams to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™, which will be held in the USA.
Inter Miami, who began play in MLS in 2020, are keen to continue expanding their brand to a global market, making success in the Club World Cup imperative for Mascherano.’

Another key component for Mascherano’s success in south Florida will be his adjustment to life in MLS. The league’s salary cap makes for restrictions on player signings, leading teams to lean on their youth academy products and scouting of college soccer players to fill important roles.
Mascherano’s experience in coaching Argentina’s U-20 and Olympic teams will be crucial to player development.
