Legendary Afghanistan All-Rounder Announces Retirement

Afghanistan’s cricketing icon Mohammad Nabi is set to retire from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) after the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

The news was confirmed by Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) CEO Naseeb Khan with the veteran all-rounder’s decision, highlighting Nabi’s intention to focus on T20 Internationals after his ODI departure.

The-39-year old has been a cornerstone of Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket, amassing 3,549 runs at an average of 27.3 and claiming 171 wickets across his 165 ODIs. Renowned for his match-winning all-round skills, Nabi’s exit from the ODI format will close a significant chapter in Afghanistan’s cricket history.

“Yes, Mohammad Nabi is retiring from ODIs after the Champions Trophy,” said Naseeb Khan. “He informed the board months ago of his plan, and we fully support his decision. We look forward to his continued contributions in T20 cricket, where his impact remains invaluable.”

As Afghanistan prepares for Nabi’s ODI farewell, the team is currently engaged in an ODI series against Bangladesh in Sharjah.

In the series opener on November 6, Afghanistan secured a resounding 92-run victory, establishing momentum ahead of the second match on November 9. While Afghanistan aims to seal the series, Bangladesh is determined to draw level in the upcoming contest.

Mohammad Nabi has seen Afghanistan go from minnows to one of the most consistent teams in the world. Despite the lack of success in the ICC tournaments, Afghanistan boasts some of the most formidable players in the world.

With a proper structure in place, the team is primed for more success in the future as evidenced by their recent triumph in the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup.
