Jake Brimmer’s message to Wellington Phoenix fans ahead of blockbuster derby

Auckland FC star Jake Brimmer has warned Wellington Phoenix supporters, telling rival fans “I’ll be back” as he looks to replicate his exploits in the second instalment of the New Zealand Derby.

It has been a record-breaking start to life for newcomers Auckland in the Isuzu UTE A-League following Saturday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle Jets at Go Media Stadium.

Late goals from Neyder Moreno and Francis De Vries helped Auckland make it five wins from five games as the Black Knights became just the second team in Australian national men’s league history to win their first five games after Sydney’s Western Suburbs in 1977, per Andy Howe.

Attention now turns to the upcoming blockbuster against the Phoenix in Auckland, where Steve Corica’s league-leading side will host wellington on Saturday, December 7.

In the first ever derby between the two sides, Brimmer scored twice at the death to lift Auckland in front of a record crowd at Sky Stadium in Wellington on November 2.

Asked if he had a message for Phoenix fans, he smiled and told Sky Sports New Zealand: “I’ll be back. I’ll be back for them.

“Work hard again this week and hopefully get the three points next week.”

Auckland are yet to concede a goal in the A-Leagues. The record-breakers created a new Australian national league record for the longest time before conceding a first ever goal, surpassing Western Suburbs, who conceded their first goal in the 53rd minute of the club’s fifth game 47 years ago.

After five straight clean sheets, Brimmer said: “It was something we spoke about all pre-season – what we wanted to achieve as a football club.
