Brisbane Roar lure champion back to the A-Leagues in ‘invaluable’ transfer

Brisbane Roar have signed Isuzu UTE A-League Championship-winning defender James McGarry from Scottish Premiership outfit Aberdeen.

New Zealand international McGarry returns to the A-Leagues on a three-year deal in Brisbane having spent the past two seasons on the books of Aberdeen.

A Championship winner with Central Coast Mariners in 2023, the 27-year-old full-back also had a loan spell at Greek second-tier outfit Athens Kallithea in 2025.

McGarry is Roar’s second signing after Milorad Stajic as their rebuild under new boss Michael Valkanis continues.

“I’m excited to be joining Brisbane Roar and representing the fans each week,” said McGarry.

“Given my experience playing A-League football, I’m confident that I can hit the ground running and play the level of football that the club and city deserve.

“I’m hungry to win at Brisbane Roar in 2025-26 and I’m ready to give my all to ensure that is the case. I can’t wait to get going.”

McGarry was a standout in Central Coast’s drought-ending 2023 triumph, scoring three goals in 21 appearances as he earned a move abroad.

During his time at Aberdeen, he played 24 games across all competitions.

Roar head coach Valkanis added: “James’ experience and ability to get up and down the wings from defence makes him a fantastic signing for the football club.

“In addition to this, James knows what it takes week in week out to win a Championship in this competition and bringing that mentality into the changeroom makes him an invaluable addition to the squad.”
