Auckland FC may be on the look out for a new defender this off-season after confirming experienced co-vice-captain Tommy Smith will depart the club in order to return to the UK.
An ever-reliable presence at the back for Steve Corica’s side in their inaugural campaign, Smith made 25 appearances for the Black Knights as they sealed an historic Premiership in their first season in the competition.

However, despite being contracted for the upcoming Isuzu UTE A-League season, the club has agreed to release the New Zealand international from the final year of his deal in order to allow him to spend more time with his young family in the UK.
“It’s been an incredible year in Auckland, and I was able to lift silverware. That’s something I’ll carry with me forever,” Smith said.
“The team, staff and fans made me feel so welcome returning back to Auckland. I’m truly grateful to have played a part in such a special first chapter for this club. It was a difficult decision to leave such a special city.”
“From the first day of pre-season, the journey we shared has been unforgettable. There’s a real sense of pride in what we built together.
“The fans created an atmosphere and community that made it feel like home. They’ve truly reignited the passion for football in Auckland.”

Following a lengthy spell with English Championship side Ipswich Town, Smith then played for several other English sides including the likes of Colchester United and MK Dons before moving to MLS side Colorado Rapids.
A brief stint with Macarthur Bulls FC followed, before the 56-time New Zealand international then joined the Black Knights in what would prove to be a memorable first campaign, with Smith ultimately named ‘Hero of the Year’ by the club’s active support base The Port.

“Tommy has been a leader on and off the field and in the community,” said Auckland FC Director of Football, Terry McFlynn.
“He bought into the vision of what we’re building at Auckland FC.”
Auckland FC CEO Nick Becker added: ““He will always be remembered as a proud member of our inaugural squad.
“He is part of a team that made history and will be remembered with fondness. We completely respect his decision to depart, and we wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
