Yanagita edged out Thailand’s Puripol Boonson in a photo finish, crossing the line in 10.20 seconds (194), just two thousandths of a second ahead of the U20 world silver medallist, who clocked 10.20 (196).
The win marked another fantastic career highlight for the Japanese sprinter, who just 10 days ago held off 2019 world champion Christian Coleman to win the 100m at the Golden Grand Prix in Tokyo, clocking 10.06.
Abdullah Abkar M. Mohammed of Saudi Arabia took bronze in 10.30.
In the women’s 100m final, Liang Xiaojing won gold in 11.37 seconds, six years after claiming silver in Doha.
The Olympian from the People’s Republic of China’s finished ahead of Singapore’s Veronica Shanti Periera, who took silver in 11.41, and Vietnam’s Tran Thi Nhi Yen, who earned bronze in 11.54.
